Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled)
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1/3 cup (5 Tablespoons; 71g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
- 1/3 cup (80ml) vegetable oil
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1/3 cup (80g) sour cream or yogurt, at room temperature
- 1 cup (240ml) milk, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 and 1/2 cups (270g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Optional: coarse sugar for sprinkling
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a muffin tin with paper liners or lightly grease it.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, vegetable oil, and sugar until smooth. Add the eggs, one at a time, whisking after each addition. Stir in the sour cream (or yogurt), milk, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips, ensuring they’re evenly distributed throughout the batter.
- Scoop the batter into muffin cups, filling each about 2/3 full. For an extra crunch, sprinkle some coarse sugar on top.
- Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. The muffins should be golden brown on top.
- Allow the muffins to cool for 5 minutes in the pan before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- Room Temperature Ingredients: Ensure eggs, milk, and sour cream (or yogurt) are at room temperature to ensure a smooth batter.
- Don’t Overmix: Overmixing the batter can result in dense muffins. Stir just until combined.
- Add-Ins: Feel free to swap chocolate chips for dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or even add chopped nuts for extra crunch.
- Extra Moisture: Add a tablespoon of honey or a mashed banana for extra moistness.
